Dr. Menon is the Director of The Medical Diagnostics & Cardio-Vascular Engineering lab - The MeDCaVE - a multidisciplinary research program, innovating at the confluence of radiology, surgical practice, informatics and high performance computing. The MeDCaVE is dedicated to healthcare advancement using robust algorithmic analysis of biomedical imaging data augmented with physics-based numerical modeling of biomechanics, which is invaluable for early technical feasibility assessment studies of novel medical device technologies. Dr. Menon's research has seen primary application in the development of quantitative metrics to support time-critical decisions relating to pediatric or adult cardiovascular pathologies, which has in-turn begun to see extended application in optimization of innovative image-guided device deployment strategies for improved outcomes and quality of life after complex surgical procedures. While the focus of research has been on novel software on the frontiers of image-based surgical planning & surgical navigation software, The MeDCaVE is also home to a one-of-it's-kind experimental facility for 3D tomographic flow quantification (at Duquesne University).

3D Tomographic Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV)
The MeDCaVE's new Tomographic Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system opens doors for quantifying 3D+time fluid dynamics in complex cardiovascular geometries, by enabling the instantaneous measurement of all three velocity components in a complete 3D laser-illuminated measurement volume. This new experimental facility includes a three-camera linear array of Imager Pro 5 cameras with Scheimpflug lens arrangements to keep the measurement volume in focus and is capable of time-series flow measurements at up to 14 Hz with capabilities to capture image pairs up to ~50 ns apart. This facility is located in 413 Libermann Hall, in Duquesne University (Pittsburgh, PA), and was set up in November 2015.

Surgical planning and Interventional Guidance
Multi-modal image fusion for real-time therapeutic guidance
Mastery over the art of fusing extra-operative ECHO, SPECT, MRI or data any other functional imaging modality onto a structural shell (from CT or MR); including: ECHO-CT, SPECT-CT fusion and MR-CT fusion. Fiducial registration and/or shape-based registration is employed to translate these objective physics-based renderings into the operative space, having full compatibility with commercial surgical navigation platforms.

Tetralogy of Fallot, Fontan, Cerebral Aneurysms, Aortic Aneurysms, Coarctation of Aorta ... the list goes on; the MeDCaVE has been involved with a series of published personalized clinical cases and specialized cohort research studies for pre-operative planning, post-surgical evaluation, and optimal blood handling device use strategy in pediatric and adult cardiovascular procedures. Geometric Surrogates for Clinical Management of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms:
26 March 2015: National Institutes of Health (NIH) R01 proposal titled, "Geometric Surrogates for Clinical Management of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms", involving intimate collaboration with The MeDCaVE, awarded $1.7 Million over 5 years, starting in April 2015, through University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA PI: Dr. Ender Finol; Co-investigators: Drs. P.G. Menon & S. Avril (Mines-Saint-Etienne)).
This grant award supports clinical research on abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) rupture risk prediction. The main goal of the study is to identify the patient-specific AAA geometry characteristics that are surrogates for patient-specific peak wall rupture risk index.
This study also received an American Heart Association (AHA) Pre-Doctoral Fellowship award funded for 2 years, starting 1 July 2015, to Mirunalini Thirugnanasambandam, PhD candidate at UTSA. Dr. Menon serves as a consultant on her AHA pre-doctoral award and also serves as a PhD thesis committee member.

This project was funded by the CMU-SYSU Collaborative Innovation Research Center (CIRC) for the 2014-2015 period. This project in collaboration with CMU Silicon Valley seeks to leverage Big Data and cloud computing techniques for the purpose of improving patient-specific medical care. Through improved Big Data machine learning techniques founded on parallel and distributed computing, this proposal aims at facilitating cloud based medical device design and optimization to better inform personalized device usage. 3D Printing as a Pre-Surgical Planning Tool for Personalized Therapy.
This work is sponsored by the 2016 Faculty Development Fund (FDF 2016) grant award from Duquesne University to Dr. Menon. During the performance period of this award, 3D printing will be investigated as a tactile tool to enhance the pre-surgical planning experience for minimally invasive left-atrial appendage occlusion procedures as well as for practicing open-heart surgical strategy for cardiac myectomy in patient with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The FDF award funds this project between August 2016 to August 2018.
Pre-Clinical Readiness Testing of Breast Palpation Aid for Home and Primary Care
This project was funded by the Disruptive Health Technology Institute (DHTI) and the Institute for Complex Engineered Systems (ICES) is part of the Carnegie Institute of Technology (CIT), at Carnegie Mellon University. This project in collaboration with Prof. James F. Antaki from Carnegie Mellon University's Biomedical Engineering Department. The objective of this proposal is to equip the primary care physicians with a sensitive visualization tool to detect and track the size, shape, stiffness and location of a palpable breast mass, to screen for breast cancer lesions.

4D Analysis of PatelloFemoral Pain Syndrome using MRI-based virtual Motion Analysis of the knee joint
This project in collaboration with South Africa's Stellenbosch University (Dr Cobus Muller), addresses the issue of the subjective nature of evaluating joint pain and the complications of intra-subject variability to design efficacious intervention protocols for patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome. It is imperative to evaluate patellofemoral pain syndrome on a patient-specific basis using advance imaging and image processing technology which reveals the interaction between bone and cartilagenous structures of the knee. A continuum shape-based patellofemoral motion analysis paradigm is investigated by The MeDCaVE to characterize pain during functional movement.
